Journeys In Silk | Exhibit at Cove Gallery
October 14 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 12:00 pm on Sunday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, repeating until October 31, 2021
Six artists from Gloucester-based Ten Pound Studio honor Rocky Neck batik artist Judith Goetemann at The Cove Gallery in a new show called Journeys in Silk. The show is currently on display through October 31, 2021. Ten Pound Studio is a silk painting and teaching studio established 10 years ago at One Center Street, Gloucester. Artists in the show are Jane Keddy, Stephen Bates, Susan Quateman, Joan Wardwell, Allyson Christopher and Connie Zaitchek.
Ten Pound Studio artists have long admired the intricate and delicate batik work of Judith Goetemann. Fittingly, The Cove Gallery is former Goetemann Gallery, where Judith’s batiks and artworks were displayed and sold for over forty years.
“As fellow textile artists, we are inspired by the beauty of Cape Ann and the luminescent colors of dyes applied to silk,” says Ten Pound Studio and Gallery 53 artist Jane Keddy. “Judith worked alone in her studio above the [Goetemann] gallery. We work as a group in a 500-foot space with 25-foot ceilings and views of Gloucester Harbor. Our techniques are as varied as our members, who range from practicing and retired musicians, planners, teachers, nurses, graphic designers, administrators and speech therapists. Some artists’ works are as detailed as Judith’s batiks. Others are loose, abstract and experimental.”
Pieces in Journeys in Silk range from wearable and decorative art to large-scale wall pieces and textile sculptures. The studio’s members’ work is displayed interspersed with Judith’s batiks.
