STOP / LOOK Rocky Neck Now 2021: Part One
February 23 - March 25
Stop/Look #1 is the 6th annual Rocky Neck Now members show from the Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC). Reflecting the lives of RNAC artists over the last year, Stop/Look is online only (www.RNACExhibitions.com), but it’s so big in spirit it’s actually two shows. Stop/Look #2 launches March 21.
If nothing else, 2020 made everyone pause, stop, lean in, and look more closely. For Rocky Neck Art Colony members, that means a wide variety of styles and subjects. Meredith Anderson, Gloucester-based graphic designer and artist, curated the show. “To make sense of the diverse works in the exhibit,” says Anderson, “I chose to create five groupings or themes that would contain a selection of pieces bearing some relation to each other.
“It sure will be nice when we can spend time putting nails in walls and moving pedestals around to show off all the great stuff that the RNAC members are doing,” adds Anderson.
Stop/Look #1 features the work of 41 artists arranged into themes. “In Other Worlds” takes the viewer from the abstract (Tree of Life, by Randolph Kelts, and Garden of Dreams, by Ann Lafferty) to the positively dreamy (Orange Dress, by Claire Wyzenbeek). “People/Places/Things” grounds the viewer in Gloucester’s working harbor (Two Friends, by Donald Gorvett), Pigeon Cove (Captain Kyle Nelson, by Leslie Herron) and onto the dining table (Celery, by Lisa Angelini-Adams). Materials are as varied as the artwork, from collage to oil painting, pastels to woodblock prints, ceramics to photography.
